Know your rights (UK)
A plain‑English guide to returns, refunds and warranties. General guidance, not legal advice.
Faulty goods — Consumer Rights Act 2015
First 30 days: if it's faulty you can reject it for a full refund.
30 days – 6 months: the retailer gets one chance to repair or replace; if that fails, you're owed a refund. In these first 6 months a fault is assumed present from the start — the retailer must prove otherwise.
After 6 months: you can still claim, but may need to show the fault was there at purchase.
Goods must be satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.
Changed your mind — bought online / at a distance
14 days from delivery to cancel, plus 14 more to send it back, for a refund (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013).
This covers online/distance orders — in‑store change‑of‑mind returns are down to the shop's own goodwill policy.
Some items are exempt (perishable, personalised, or unsealed hygiene/media).
Warranties & guarantees
A manufacturer's warranty is extra to your legal rights — never instead of them.
Your claim for faulty goods is with the retailer who sold it, not the manufacturer.
In England & Wales you can generally claim up to 6 years from purchase (5 in Scotland) — though that isn't a "6‑year guarantee".
